Sometimes the gods themselves want to exact revenge. And that's where Nemesis comes in. Captured here by German painter Alfred Rethel in 1837, she is pursuing a murderer across a dark plain while the body lies behind them. Note the thorns to the left, the weird mix of cloud and light on the horizon, and the chillingly blank face of the avenging spirit.
